Here’s the good news: you can get all that user info from Azure Active Directory connected to Jira. It is crucial to ensure that your Jira instance is configured well for seamless integration.

Is Azure AD discontinued?
Let’s Azure dispel some doubts first. AD itself isn’t discontinued, but some parts of it are being phased out. Here’s the breakdown:
- Azure AD service: Still very much active and being updated by Microsoft.
- Azure AD Graph (API for accessing user data): Retired in June 2023. Use Microsoft Graph instead.
- Azure AD PowerShell modules: Deprecated in March 2024, but will continue to function with limited support until March 2025. Microsoft recommends switching to the Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL) for applications.
So, while Azure AD is still the main service for identity and access management, some of the older ways to interact with it are being replaced with newer options.
What is Microsoft Entra ID?

Here’s how to configure Atlassian Access with Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD). Remember, only Jira Admins can perform this initial setup. But the good news is: it’s a one-time process!
Before you begin:
- Make sure you have Atlassian Access subscribed for your organization.
- You’ll need admin privileges for both: Atlassian Admin Console and Microsoft Entra ID.
Steps:
- Log in to your Atlassian Admin Console: https://admin.atlassian.com/ and select your organization.
- Go to the Security section and then select Identity Providers.
- Add Microsoft Entra ID: click on Add identity provider and choose Microsoft Azure AD.
- Give your directory a name and choose Automatically set up user provisioning (recommended).
- Click on Sign in with Microsoft to start the connection.

How do I connect Jira to Azure AD Attributes Sync?
Once you install the app, you need to:
- In Jira, go to Jira settings > Apps.
- In the Azure AD Attributes section, choose Configuration.
- Click the Add Directory button.
- Complete primary domain, or tenant ID and click the Generate authentication link.
- Follow the newly generated link to authorize the app in Azure Active Directory. If you are not an Azure admin, forward this link to the appropriate person.
- The link will direct you (or the Azure admin) to the authorization site in Azure Active Directory. To complete the authorization process, click Accept.
Selecting user information from Azure AD to display in Jira
When authentication is finished, you as a project admin can go to Azure AD Sync. It is a dedicated page in the Project settings. Here you can choose the attributes from Azure Active Directory you’d like to display on the issue view or the request detailed view in Jira.
Your settings will be applied to the entire project. However, if some selected attributes are empty in a specific user profile in Azure AD, those attributes will not be displayed in Jira. When you open your tasks later, you will find the AD attributes in the right panel.
