Custom user attributes

Azure AD admin can create custom attribute sets via Azure AD portal. They can be used in self-service sign-up user flows.

Warning

Ensure you have the necessary Azure AD permissions, specifically the Application.Read.All permission. Without it, custom user attributes won’t be available for mapping.

Steps

Here is how to add custom attributes to self-service sign-up flows:

  1. Sign in to the Azure AD portal as an Azure AD administrator.
  2. Go to Azure AD services.
  3. Select Azure AD.
  4. In the menu on the left-hand side, choose External Identities.

  5. Select Custom user attributes.

  6. Click Add.

  7. Fill in the Add an attribute sidebar.
Tip

To correctly display multi-component custom attribute names, follow one of two naming patterns presented below:

  • Separate each name component with an underscore:
    attribute_with_underscore
  • Start each name component with a capital letter, and use lowercase for the remaining letters:
    My New Custom Attribute
  1. Click Create.

Result

Newly created custom user attributes appear alongside all existing attributes in the app’s Synchronization tab.

Custom user attributes are also displayed under User attributes on the Issue details view.
