Create from template

This chapter provides information about the Create from template feature available on the Jira create screen.

Issue Templates for Jira Cloud allows to select and apply templates directly on the native Jira create screen. With this feature users can intuitively use previously-created templates from repositories. See the configuration below for details.

Before you start

Make sure you have configured a template that is available for the space you want to use and you have admin permissions.

This method doesn’t apply to team-managed spaces. See the Team managed spaces chapter for detailed instructions.

Navigate to Marketplace Apps>Issue Templates>Global Configuration.
Switch to the UI Configuration tab.
Enable the toggle.
Select spaces you want to add the template field to. Selected spaces will have the template selection field added to the create screen.

Steps

Try live demo:

Click the Create button as you would create any other Jira work item.
Select Template source and Template from the template field added by the app. These are the templates stored in a Repository that is available for this space.

If you can’t see this field, follow these steps:

Click Confirm and if your template contains Dynamic Variables, fill them accordingly.

Fill the fields that are configured in your template.
Click Create, applying a template will continue and other work items (including sub-tasks, links) will be generated based on your template data.

Tip

If you navigate to your template and click the Usage reports tab you can see the status of your work item creation process.

Visibility

To select which user groups can use the Create from Template feature follow instructions in the Global configuration chapter.

Match work item types

You can check the Match work item type box to narrow down templates that only match the currently selected work item.

There are three steps, used by the Issue Templates for Jira app, to match work item type from template with work item that will be created from it:

By ID - app picks an work item type in the target space with the same ID as set in template. If there’s no match, then it looks:
By name - useful for team-managed spaces, where work item types are local and always have different ID as against other spaces
By type - useful for subtasks; if there’s no match in previous steps, then the ITC app picks the first found subtask type from the target space
