Issue Security Level and Use as a Template

Learn how Issue Templates handles Issue Security Level when converting an issue into a template

When you use Use as a template to create a template from an existing issue, Issue Templates automatically copies the issue’s Issue Security Level settings to the template project. This ensures that the visibility rules configured in the source project are preserved in the template.

How it works

The behavior depends on whether the source issue has an Issue Security Level assigned:

Issue has an Issue Security Level

If the issue has an Issue Security Level assigned, Issue Templates transfers the corresponding security level rules to the template project:

  1. The app reads the Issue Security Level rules from the source issue.
  2. If those rules reference project roles, the app identifies which users and groups belong to those roles in the source project.
  3. The identified users and groups are assigned to the corresponding Issue Security Level rules in the template project.

Issue has no Issue Security Level

If the issue does not have an Issue Security Level assigned, Issue Templates uses the source project’s Browse Project permission as the basis for creating a new Issue Security Level in the template project. The permission members (users, groups) are mapped using the same rules as above.

Copying Issue Security Level

When using Use as a template with Issue Security Level, the behavior depends on whether the template project already has an Issue Security Scheme configured:

  • No Issue Security Scheme on the template project - Issue Templates creates a new scheme and assigns the appropriate security levels to it.
  • Issue Security Scheme already exists on the template project - Issue Templates assigns the security levels to the existing scheme.

Steps

  1. Open the issue you want to convert into a template.
  2. Click More and select Use as a template.
  3. Select the issue relations you want to include in the template scope.
  4. Enter a name for the template.
  5. Select the Copy source issues permissions checkbox.
  6. Click Validate.
  7. Click Use as a template.

Result

  • A template structure is created in the template project.
  • The Security level field is visible in the Template Details panel on the template issue.
  • New security level entries appear under Project Settings > Issue Security in the template project.

Cloning a structure

When you use Use as a template on an issue that is part of a structure (for example, an epic with stories and subtasks), Issue Templates maps the Issue Security Level for each element of the structure individually, preserving the original visibility settings across all cloned issues.

Requirements

Issue Security Level copying requires the following setup:

  • The template project must have an Issue Security Scheme configured.
  • The user performing Use as a template must have Jira Administrator permissions (required to create or update Issue Security Levels in the template project).
